What is at home sleep testing?
A home sleep test is a simple-to-perform diagnostic procedure your patient will take in the comfort of their own home. While they sleep, the home sleep test device monitors their breathing and records pauses in their breathing known as Apneas. Home sleep testing is used to uncover Sleep-disordered Breathing (SDB) specifically; it is intended only for those persons who exhibit clinical signs and symptoms of (SDB).
The symptoms of sleep disorders and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are important to recognize in patients.
One of the most recognizable symptoms of sleep disorders is snoring, even though many patients ignore this sign or fail to recognize it as a symptom of a more serious condition.
Other symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing may include:
excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS)
What do sleep studies measure?
Physician Imaging Solutions’ ApneaLink Air is capable of recording up to five channels of information, including respiratory effort, pulse, oxygen saturation, nasal flow and snoring.
Among other things, the sleep study will indicate the severity of your patient’s condition,
which is classified according to an apnea/hypopnea index (AHI).
In addition to the patient’s AHI, the diagnosis will take into account the patient’s oxygen desaturation and excessive daytime sleepiness.
If your patient presents with any of these symptoms, it's important to talk to them about SDB and recommend a sleep test.
Several benefits to Home Sleep Testing (HST) - For The Patient
You'll be able to spend the night at home, in your familiar surroundings, instead of in an unfamiliar sleep lab.
Home sleep testing is great for those who are home-bound, are elderly, have chronic illness, cannot arrange for transportation, need nighttime health care, or cannot take time out of their schedules to arrange an in-lab study.
Use the HST for a fraction of the cost of going to a sleep lab, and get similar results in the diagnosis of Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB).
